Spirit Day: The color Purple

20 Oct

In the spirit of  Spirit Day, I’m dedicating this post to everything purple. In case you haven’t heard, October 20th was designated “Spirit Day” by a Canadian teenager, Brittany McMillan, to honor the teenagers who recently committed suicide after anti-LGBT bullying online.

“By wearing purple online and offline today, millions of Americans are sending an important message to let gay and lesbian youth know that they are supported for being exactly who they are,” GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said.

Aside from that… purple is sort of having a moment in the fashion world, and everyone is sort of ignoring it. Shades of purple were featured all over the runways for F/W 2010.

Personally, I think it is a perfectly rich fall color that gushes high class and sophistication. ( side note* Historically, the color purple has been associated with royalty, wealth and power, and only the most expensive dyes were used to produce it.)

You can add an unexpected splash off purple on your nails, or commit yourself to a purple sequins dress (How disco of you!?). Whichever way you go, you can’t go wrong….just don’t over do it and wear it all at once…

Here are my top picks.

Clockwise from the left: 3.1 Phillip Lim – sequins dress $1,100;

Catherine Malandrino – Cashmere sweater $380;

Christian Louboutin –  heels $1,395; Amazon.com – umbrella $8.99;

Nars – nail polish $16,

Mulberry – studded booties $595JJ Winters – fringed clutch $297;

Balmain – brocade jacket $10,085; Balmain – feather coat $6,145;

Jerome Dreyfuss – Twee mini purple suede bag $610.

    Love the tops, heels and blazer. Very lovely shade of purple.
    I’m glad there is a day for this; it creates more awareness on such a touching subject.
